Climate

During our wintertime it is summer in Bahia. And that means:
The maximum temperature is usually approximately 28 – 32 degrees. Sometimes up to 35 degrees around noon.
This is a time when you should better not be out and about. January is the hottest month. During this time, the lowest temperature at night is around 23 degrees, during the day you can expect 32 degrees.

With a relative humidity of 60-70% it is not as muggy as in Rio and not as humid as by the Amazon. Along the coast, there is always a fresh breeze. Truly rainy days are rare. If it rains, then only for a short time.

Most of the rain falls from April to June. OK, there are also some exceptions. The water temperature by the beach is around 23 degrees.

You should adjust your clothing to the hot temperatures. During the Bahian summer, you mainly need light blouses and shirts during the daytime. Men only take long trousers along, because in Brazil it is not customary to wear shorts at night.

Carnival

In Brazil, February is the time for joyous festivities. It is time for carnival, the festival during which the Brazilians, disguised with masks and costumes, reveal their own pure essence in a joyous, creative, musical and relentless way.

Officially, carnival in Brazil begins on Sunday and ends on the following Thursday, almost always in February. - The date of the festival is different every year.

During these three days, the entire country decorates itself. In some places, tradition prevails. The official ceremonies continue for more than a week, not counting the “preceding festivals”, which basically continue all summer long.

And although the content is almost always the same, every carnival festival throughout the land has its own characteristics. Salvador is the centre for the world’s largest street carnival, which by now has surpassed the carnival in Rio and Olinda in terms of popularity and vogue.

In contrast to Rio, there are no Samba arenas, so that all activities take place in the streets.

Bahia’s carnival is more original and even more spectacular than the one in Rio.

In February, all of Salvador da Bahia transforms – an event you absolutely must witness at least once.

Country & people

BRASILEIROS is what the Brazilians call themselves in the national language Portuguese. Due to the mix of European, African and Indian ancestors, skin tones come in all shades. In Bahia, the majority is dark. You often get the impression that most Brazilians are between 20 and 30 years old – compared to Germany there are many more young people.

Brazilians attach great importance to their appearance. They are famous for their joy, the „Allegria”, and love to dance and sing. They are friendly, spontaneous, funny, patient and helpful. To Germans, they may sometimes seem superficial.

They have more of a temper, get agitated faster, but also calm down faster. Both men and women are more jealous than Germans. Many Brazilians adore blond German women. Brazilian women admire the reliability (and income) of German men.

For the Brasileiros, the best thing about Germany is: the functioning judicial system, the higher level of safety in the cities and the generally better functioning of our society’s organization.

When they are in Alemanha, apart from families and friends, they mostly miss the sun and the sea. Officially, there are approximately 2000 Brazilians living in Berlin.

Leasure activities

Surfing is very popular. In Itacare near Ilheus there is a surfing school. Various surfing competitions are held in Bahia. Another very popular sport is kite surfing. You will discover plenty of opportunities to try out or learn this modern sport.

Windsurfing This sport is very popular on Itaparica island. The beach is protected by a coral reef which becomes visible at low tide. Because of this, there are not too many waves. The wind is weak in the mornings and keeps increasing throughout the day.
This makes the area perfect for beginners. North of Salvador, there are several equipment rental stations. You will find more in the tourist centre in Porto Sauipe and in Itapuan.

Snorkelling and diving Almost all along the coastline, you will find offshore coral reefs in which you can snorkel and dive. The swell and the bedrock determine, how far you can see underwater. Several diving clubs know the best diving spots and offer day trips.

At an average water temperature of 25 degrees, you can swim for hours. For example in the many natural pools that form at low tide. Sharks are seen very rarely, but dolphins show up regularly. The rivers are not so suitable for diving, as the view underwater tends to be impaired by churned up sand and leaves.

Supposedly, there are piranhas in most rivers, but the Brazilians don’t seem to be too afraid of them.
